How to convert Excel to HTML

What the HTML looks like
You get a real HTML table. Header cells use th, body rows use td, and the whole thing sits inside one table element. It reads well for screen readers and for search engines, and you can restyle it with your own CSS.

The Excel 97 to 2003 format. Old files still convert without opening Excel.

When an HTML table is not enough
An HTML table is a photograph of your data. That is exactly right for some jobs and wrong for others. Here is the honest split.
An HTML table is the right answer when
- You are publishing a price list, a schedule or a results table that changes rarely.
- You need the numbers inside an email, a CMS post or a documentation page.
- You want the data readable by search engines instead of locked in a download.
- Nobody needs to edit it once it is on the page.
You need a real app when
- The numbers change, so you would be re-converting and re-uploading every week.
- More than one person needs to add or edit rows without overwriting each other.
- Different people should see different rows, so you need logins and permissions.
- Your formulas have to keep working, not just their last calculated values.

Is this Excel to HTML converter free?
Yes. The converter is free and there is no signup, no email wall and no watermark. It stays free because it runs entirely in your browser, so it costs us nothing to serve.
Do you upload or store my spreadsheet?
No. Your file is read by JavaScript running on your own device using the open source SheetJS library. It is never sent to our servers. You can turn off your network connection after the page loads and the converter still works.
How do I convert XLS to HTML without Excel?
Pick the .xls file in the box at the top of this page. The converter reads the old Excel 97 to 2003 format directly, so you do not need Excel or any other spreadsheet program installed.
Can I convert a whole workbook with several sheets?
Yes. Every worksheet in the file gets its own tab above the preview. Click a tab to convert that sheet. Convert and copy each one you need.
Does it keep my Excel formulas?
No, and no HTML converter can. HTML has no calculation engine, so what you get is the last calculated value of each cell. If you need the formulas to keep working, you need an application rather than a table. Our Excel to app converter maps formulas to real rules in code.
Will my cell colours and fonts carry across?
The converter deliberately drops Excel's formatting and gives you clean semantic markup instead. Tick the stylesheet option to get simple, readable styling you can edit. Excel's own Save As Web Page keeps the colours, but it does it with thousands of lines of Office specific markup.
How do I put the table on my website?

What is the difference between this and the Excel to website builder?
This page gives you a static HTML table, which is a snapshot you paste into a page you already have. Can I convert HTML back into Excel?
Yes, but with a different method. Excel can import an HTML table directly, and the steps are in our HTML to Excel guide.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no limit we impose. The practical limit is your browser's memory. Workbooks in the tens of megabytes convert fine on a normal laptop.
